Anna Maria Green Cook

From the Union Recorder at the time of her funeral, about Feb. 9, 1936, and her book, History of Baldwin County, Georgia:

Mrs. Cook spent most of her life in Midway. She was the daughter of Dr. Thomas F. Green, one of the first superintendents of the Milledgeville State Hospital and Mrs. Addie Crowder Green. She was a young wman when the war between the states came and with courage and fortitude that characterized the women of the south she joined them in meeting the grave issues of this trying period and gave of her time and substance to aid in the cause that she believed right. She came through the period of reconstruction and never faltered in her ideals of Christian service. She married Samuel Austin Cook on April 8, 1869, and was the mother of 10 children.

Mrs. Cook's first duty was to her church and she was always devoted to its teachings. She was also a faithful member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Woman Christian Temperance Union, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was life Chaplain of the latter organization.

Mrs. Cook retained an interest in current events until the last and carefully read the newspapers. She began a diary when a young girl, and this record of almost a century revealed many interesting events. She attended the famous secession convention in Milledgeville and this historical event always lingered in her mind. She told interestingly of Sherman's visit to Milledgeville. A few years ago Mrs. Cook wrote the history of Baldwin County, and this book has been a rich contribution to the history and records of this county.

Mrs. Cook is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Addie Proctor and Miss Callie Cook, and one son, Mr. Ansel Brewster Cook, all of this city, nine grandchildren, including Gerald Cook, of this city; Mrs Bascom Deaver and Sam Proctor, of Macon; and six great grandchildren.
