MILLEDGEVILLE — Read L. Cobb Jr. was born on April 22, 1951, in Sparta, Ga., Hancock County, to the late Read L. Cobb, Sr. and Willie Bell Stembridge Cobb.

To this union four sons and four daughters were born.

Read was educated in the public school system of Hancock County. At an early age he joined Hunts Chapel A.M.E. Church. He was employed by Fowler-Flemister Concrete in Eatonton, Ga., for 25 years.

After a gradual decline in health, our beloved Read passed peacefully on Sept. 17, 2013, at The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. He was surrounded and supported by his loving wife and family.

Read was preceded in death by parents, Read L. Cobb Sr. and Willie Bell Cobb, and brother, Jimmy Stembridge.

He was a great fisherman, He and his cousin, best friend, James Cobb, loved to go fishing and hunting. He also loved playing with his grandchildren in his spare time. He was known to them as granddaddy and PaPa.

He leaves cherished memories to a loving an devoted wife, Velma Nelson Cobb; five children, LaTonja Edwards, Darryl (MaKeisha) Nelson, Read L. Cobb III, Nastassia (Clarence) Reynolds, Brittney Cobb; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Wallace (Penny) Cobb, Linton "Pootang" Cobb of Sparta, Larry (Deborah) Cobb of Covington; four sisters, Mildred Foster of Chester, Penn., Hazel Cobb of Decatur, Ga., Sheila Cobb and Sandy Cobb of Sparta; father and mother-in-law, Walter and Willie K. Nelson of Eatonton; brothers-in-law, Jerry (RoseMary) Nelson, Wayne (Peggy) Nelson, Terrence (Abigail) Nelson of Eatonton; sisters-in-law, Barbara Walton, Edna Nelson of Decatur, Frankie (Grady) Clemons and Yolanda Nelson of Eatonton; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; special friends and cousins, James Cobb, Ktoe Farley and Maggie Warren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at 2 p.m. from Hunts Chapel A.M.E. Church, 900 Hunts Chapel Road, Sparta. The Rev. Johnny Sanders, pastor; the Rev. Parnell Moseley, officiating.

His remains will be placed in the church at noon. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.

The cortege will assemble Saturday at 12:30 P.M. from 231-A M.L.K. Jr. Drive, Eatonton.
