David Dickson

David Dickson was first a prominent Sparta merchant before acquiring 266 acres of land and beginning farming in 1845. He is credited with devising several new agricultural methods by which he was able to produce spectacular yields of corn and cotton. Along with his brother, Thomas, David Dickson was long considered one of Hancock County's most innovative and successful planters. In 1860, he owned 13,000 acres of land; his real estate holdings were worth $200,000 that year as opposed to only $15,000 in 1850.
