John Dismukes
(Jesse is on gravestone and is an error)

There is no real evidence concerning Jesse Dismukes. All evidence appears to be connected with a "John Dismukes." It is believed that John Dismukes, who is interred in Memory Hill and recorded as Jesse Dismukes, was originally buried in the Dismukes cemetery in northwestern Baldwin County. The tombstone on the grave in Memory Hill reads "GA Troops" but this standard notation used by the DAR to mark graves is not accurate. John Dismukes was in SC when he joined in 1777, and he served with the 3d South Carolina Regiment, commanded by Col. William Thompson, per family members.

Mon. Mar.16, 1818, Died: " In Baldwin County on the 4th inst., in his 93rd year, JOHN DISMUKES, a native of Virginia. He fought in Braddock's War [Editor: French and Indian War, 1755] and was a soldier in the Revolution. He was an honest, humane, patriotic man, and was much esteemed by his many acquaintances." [1][2][3]

Elizabeth Dismukes and Maurice Martin applied for letters of administration on John Dismuke's estate in Milledgeville, Mar. 2, 1818. [Published Georgia Journal, Mar. 10, 1818 -- page 3]. While the date in this article states Mar. 2, it appears there is some confusion, since the "4th inst", his death date, means the 4th of this month. Reference to this article is made here because it is likely that Elizabeth Dismukes was John Dismuke's wife. According to http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/u/l/John-E-Sullivan-Vancouver/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0008.html, his wife was Elizabeth Finney. She is probably buried in the Dismukes family cemetery that was destroyed in northwestern Baldwin County.
